Sci-fi short story reading club
You may have gathered that I love sci-fi films. I even decided to start a whole podcast about them so I could watch more. I have, however, read very little SF literature aside from a small handful of very mainstream novels.
So I've decided I'll start with some SF short stories. You can keep up to date with the reading on my Instagram page @everyscififilm here and find the list and links to the short stories below. As always I would love to hear your thoughts. The easiest option is to comment on Instagram or YouTube the handle is always @everyscififilm.
The list:
1. 9th June 2024
The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas - Ursula K Le Guin (1973)
You can click the link in the title. I chose this story as it was mentioned in episode 1 of the podcast What is Science Fiction? when we spoke about dystopia and utopia. I think I only became aware of Le Guin around 3-5 years ago and every single time she is mentioned it is usually with such high regard that it's quite abysmal (and embarrassing) that I haven't read anything by her yet. This must be rectified slowly but I shall begin here and now! Godspeed to any of you that are also juggling the many aspects of life and barely have the time to do anything. (This actually reminds me that I haven't spoken to my mum in a long time and she is way more important than this podcast. I better rectify that while I'm at it!)
2. 20th July 2024
The Ones Who Stay and Fight - NK Jemisin (2020)
You can click the link in the title. This story is also mentioned in the first episode of the podcast What is Science Fiction? It is a direct response to Ursula K Le Guin's The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas. N. K. Jemisin is a New York Times bestselling author and the first author to win three consecutive Best Novel Hugo Awards. You can learn more about NK Jemisin on her website here. I will be posting a follow up on Instagram in a week or two for those that want to discuss the story.
